Christopher Julius Rock III was born on February 7, 1965, in Andrews, South Carolina. He was raised in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York by his parents, Julius Rock, who was a truck driver and newspaper deliveryman, and Rosalie Rock, who worked as a teacher and social worker for the mentally handicapped. He also has seven siblings, including his brother, Tony Rock, who is also a comedian.
Rock grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where he was faced with racial discrimination and bullying at school, which made him drop out of high school at the age of 17.
After dropping out, he worked minor jobs at various fast-food restaurants while trying his hand at stand-up comedy at local clubs. He was later discovered by Eddie Murphy, who became his mentor and gave him a role in his film “Beverly Hills Cop ll” in 1987.
In the mid-1980s, Rock steadily rose up the comedy circuit ranks. His big break came in 1990 at age 25 when he was recruited to join the cast of Saturday Night Live. Though he left SNL in 1993, it kick-started Chris into mainstream fame.
He starred in films such as “Boomerang”, “New Jack City”, and “CB4”, and had guest roles in shows such as “In Living Color”, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, and “Martin”. He also released several successful comedy albums and specials, such as “Bring the Pain”, “Bigger & Blacker”, and “Never Scared”, which earned him four Emmy Awards and three Grammy Awards.
